Merkantil Bank Zrt.

Merkantil Bank commenced operations in 1988 as a specialized financial institution, established as a subsidiary of the National Commercial and Credit Bank (Országos Kereskedelmi és Hitelbank), with its core business areas being corporate development, factoring, and leasing.

In 1992, Merkantil Bank was the first in Hungary to introduce installment sales for passenger cars, swiftly becoming a market leader in vehicle financing. In 1996, Merkantil Bank Zrt. became a wholly owned subsidiary of OTP Bank Plc., the largest financial institution in Hungary, which further strengthened Merkantil Bank’s leading position in the vehicle financing sector. Additionally, Merkantil Bank continuously expanded its range of products offered to both automotive dealers and buyers. A key element of Merkantil Bank's strategy is to enhance synergies with OTP Bank.

Following an assessment of market demands, Merkantil Bank launched its Fleet and Equipment Leasing divisions, extending its business activities to cover the entire value chain of the vehicle financing market, thereby maintaining its role as a key player in Hungary’s vehicle financing sector.

The owner with controlling interest in Merkantil Bank Zrt. is OTP Bank Plc., holding 100% ownership and voting rights.
